Hair Color & Styles

FTV: Jada’s hair is always rockin’ and bringing about new style trends. You work with the James Joseph Salon. We’re sure your fans and our readers would love to know more about how you keep your hair looking so good. What do you do to keep your hair healthy and shiny?

JADA: We use special products that our colorist Michelle Lee from James Joseph Salon (jamesjosephsalon.com) recommends for us individually. Each of us prefers different brands of hair products, but we all love the Soma and Moroccan Oil Hydrating Lines. Our hair soaks up the conditioning treatment! Michelle also taught us how important it is to protect our hair from heating tools like flat irons and hair dryers. Using a heat protectant before using these tools will make anyone’s hair very happy! Sebastian carries some great products that focus on heat protection.
We just did a photo shoot for James Joseph Salon. We are their models for their new ad campaigns in Stuff @ Night Magazine and the Improper Bostonian Magazine. We had some pretty intricate hairstyles that needed extra heat protection! Michelle was great and knew just what our hair needed for the shoot! Our stylist Christopher Kezik also always uses heat protectant for our hair! He creates the most amazing hairstyles on us that require special products. There is a sea-salt product that we love that makes it look like you have fun beachy waves!

FTV: Which colors/highlights do you like most?

LAUREN: I love being blonde! I have had many different shades of blonde over the years, but have always loved bright platinum color. I might change my color down the road, but I have been blonde since I was a little girl so it has stuck with me:) I have dark pieces underneath, too, which adds a little extra flavor!
JACYN: Generally I have stuck with shades of brown and darker colors. At one point it was a combo of caramel blondes and browns that we called “autumn leaves”…haha. Last year I went dark brown with a brand new bob haircut and purple streaks on either side of my head. I am still digging that. It’s fun without being too crazy! It also makes people ask me questions about what I do for work. I guess purple isn’t an everyday color choice!

Clothes & Style

FTV: How would you describe your clothing style?

JADA: Our image has changed so much over the years!! As a group we love looking glam, sexy, and funky, but with a cool rocker edge. We like to play up different styles too because individually we have different looks. We look up to people like Gwen Stefani and Rihanna because they are always ahead of the trends and not afraid to try something different! We have worked with some pretty amazing stylists our favorite being Kithe Brewster! (Heidi Klum, Beyonce, Tyra Banks). He styled our big packaging shoot for our album and we loved his style! He really came up with a great image for us, but still kept our individual styles as well! We got to wear one of a kind dresses that were flown in from Japan!

Dentistry

FTV: Your smiles are beautiful, do you use whitening strips or are they whitened professionally?

JADA: Thanks! We have all had Zoom whitening done at Dr. Meola’s office: The Dental Associates of New England near Boston. It definitely worked! Our teeth were sparkly white for months. We all had to drink fruit juice and coffee through straws because after whitening those drinks can stain your teeth! It was a funny sight.

Makeup & Skin
FTV: What is your typical makeup routine when you’re not performing?

LAUREN: When I’m performing I love being fresh and glamorous with my make-up! You can have so much fun with it! Our make-up artist Debra Macki of Debra Macki Cosmetics is amazing! (www.debramacki.com) We love her and her line has incredible colors of shadows and lip gloss!! My favorite lip gloss is Casino☺! On a daily basis I don’t wear much make-up. For everyday I like to wear mascara, under-eye, and blush! I need my chap stick so I use that too on a daily basis! You can get all you need from Debra! She’s got it all!
ELLE: I love makeup when we’re doing photo shoots and shows, especially really dramatic colors and lashes!! I love lashes! But when I’m just hanging out on a day-to-day basis I hate wearing a lot of makeup. I’ll put on some mascara and maybe some blush but that’s it!!
APRIL: Day to day make up for me changes all the time! Most days I wear very little, but sometimes I like to experiment with crazy eye shadow. It’s kind of like painting to me so I try new things and colors based on what I’m wearing that day.
JACYN: I love MAC mineral makeup! I just discovered it the other day. Basically, I start with a concealer by Debra Macki Cosmetics (she makes FAB stuff–find it online at debramacki.com) and lip gloss (by Debra as well!) I try to go minimal for daytime with a bit of mascara and blush in addition to the mineral stuff just to look more lively.hehehe:) The lighter the better I always say! You never want someone to be like “ohhhhh you have makeup on your neck” or something. Natural is the way! For performances of course we go a little more dramatic. Smoky eyes are a must for me!

Music & All that Jazz

FTV: What is a “Jada Ninja” ? How does a fan sign up and what will they receive for being one?

JADA: A Jada Street Ninja is a very special person:) Being a ninja is like being a member of a street team, but BETTER! Initiation is simple: email us at streetninjas@jadamusic.com. You will get a welcome message and be automatically entered into all of our street ninja “missions”. All of our missions have rad prizes! Ninja privileges include advance notice of shows, back stage passes & meeting other celebs, miscellaneous happenings and Jada events! Basically you need to be one!

FTV: As far as your recorded music, where have you traveled for it?

JADA: Since being signed to Motown we’ve been focusing on recording the album which has been so much fun and an amazing experience. We’ve traveled to Miami, LA, Atlanta, and New York. Most recently we were in LA working with Jordan Omley from the JAM (Brandy and JoJo) and Andrew Frampton and Wayne Wilkinson (Natasha Beddingfield). It was a very productive week! We recorded four great songs which wrapped up our album! We are picking the single very soon which will be out January 20th!

FTV: When you get home how long do you need before you feel ready to hop on the plane again?

JADA: It really depends. If we are in Miami we don’t want to come back to chilly Boston. We’ve been lucky to have done a lot of our work in warmer climates during the coldest months here in New England. As long as we have time to do laundry and say hi to our family and friends for a day or two we can leave town again without much of a problem! A lot of the time we have to be ready with our bags packed! One time we got a phone call saying “You have to be in Atlanta tonight!” It was crazy, but exciting too! We had to scramble to make it to the airport!

FTV: You have a single being released on January 20, 2009, what is the name of it, and what can listeners expect from the song as far as the meaning behind it and the melody/rhythm in it?

JADA: We do have a single coming out very soon in January, which we are so super excited for! We are actually torn between a couple songs still to be the single so we don’t have the name of it just yet. But we will be posting it as soon as we do know on our MySpace so check us out on there! www.myspace.com/jada

FTV: Who did you meet while out in Los Angeles recently?

JADA: David Hasslehoff! We were at a launch party for the web series “Easy to Assemble” when we caught view of the Hoff and freaked out!! He was trying to get in to the party, but wasn’t coming in so we ran over to him! He was really nice. We sang for him and talked with him for a few minutes. He even taped us on his video camera for his website too!
FTV: Did you perform out there or was it mostly only for recording/writing music?

JADA: We recorded straight through the week with Jordan Omley from the Jam and Andrew Frampton and Wayne Wilkinson. We also met with The Agency Group and some major music publishers to talk about getting our music in films. It was a great experience to talk to such successful people in the business! We can’t wait to work with them! But back here in Boston, we did just perform the National Anthem on national television for the NFL Patriots vs. Jets game. It was a thrill. There were amazing pyrotechnics as we ended the song. It was a really packed house! And a funny note was that the NFL broadcast had some serious technical glitches that sounded like censorship bleeping, so there was a lot of chatter online about that, including an article in the LA Times! But we got texted by friends all across the country who watched so that was a blast.

FTV: When did you all begin singing?

JADA: We all started when we were really little! About the time when we started to talk! Lol Music has bee a part of all of our lives since we were born. It is what brought us together! When we all got into JADA we were really able to develop as singers and artists. Ric and Laura Poulin of Bristol Studios in Boston put us together and have helped us through their artist development program. Ric is our vocal couch and producer and has taught us so much about the pop/gospel method of singing. It is truly remarkable to see how far we have all come as vocalists and performers. FTV: What is on your playlist right now?

LAUREN: Jazmine Sullivan, some old school Lauryn Hill, and new Beyonce!
ELLE: Rihanna, Rascal Flatts, and Duffy at the moment!
APRIL: Chris Brown, T.I., and Tim Benson! You haven’t heard of Tim yet, but you will!
JACYN: Paramore, Jazmine Sullivan, and Keri Hilson

FTV: What makes you decide that you like a new song, is it the lyrics, rhythms, melody?

JADA: It’s all of those things! A song does have so many parts to it and they all need to be great for the song itself to be great!

FTV: Do you find certain songs suit certain moods?

JADA: Definitely! Songs are exactly that! You listen to certain songs when you’re sad about a breakup, or when you’re having a great day, or when you’re getting ready for a night out with friends. That’s why music is such a universal language. We all might not understand what we’re saying, but we all do understand how music makes us feel!

Even with the recent cold weather of the winter, the stage is the warm place to be when Jada’s on it! This girl group is on fire with their recent signing with Universal Motown Records, get ready to hear a lot more from these girls!

FTV sat down for an online chat with Jada to catch up with them and find out what life is like for these new Universal Recording Artists!

FTV:CONGRATULATIONS on your signing with Universal Motown Records!!

Jada: Thank you soooo much! We were sooo excited to get the news and we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the Motown family!

FTV: That is so awesome, you deserve only the best! We wish we could have been at your celebration party, how was that?

Jada: Thanks! The party was amazing! It definitely took a second to plan! We had such a good time and there were so many people there! We did a 1960s Motown theme where we dressed up and got our hair done in old school beehive do’s etc. We went all out. We pretty much ate food, mingled and danced the night away! We had this awesome cake done that said “Motown’s newest Divas” and we were so busy all night that we completely forgot to cut the cake! That was pretty funny we have to say.

FTV: What was the process like in having Universal Motown Records discover you?

Jada: Well, over the whole summer of 06 we showcased for about 9 major labels in NYC and Motown was the last label we saw. We actually found out that they wanted to sign us to their label the day after Jacyn’s Birthday! It was extremely emotional and amazing. There was crying, laughing, more crying, some jumping up and down and some swearing! I mean, shhhh don’t tell anyone! We couldn’t believe what we were hearing! Motown has had such amazing acts like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, The Jackson 5 and sooo many more performers that have shaped the music Industry. We feel so honored to be on the same label as these legends.

FTV: it must have been so surreal to see how all your hard work paid off and just the feeling of victory in reaching this goal! How awesome!
Jada: Thanks! Now we have MORE work to do!!! It’s a fun job though

FTV: What was it like on your very first day as “Universal Motown Recording” artists?

Jada: We dressed up, signed our contracts and ate!
FTV: good food??
Jada: I think we had chocolate that day–and fruit, and all kinds of fun stuff! Our manager and producer gave us tickets to see Cirque Du Soleil as a congrats!

FTV: how did you like the show??
Jada: It was phenomenal
FTV We’ve heard it’s amazing!
Jada: We all were thinking…”let’s incorporate some of Cirque Du Soleil into our live concert someday!”

FTV: We understand you’re going to be recording a whole new album, how far along are you on it?
Jada: Well we’ve got about 13 songs in the can (demo’d out). Word on the street is we’ll probably be doing about 30 songs so we can pick the best 12 at the end for the album! We hope to get some really good stuff over the next month or two. Our goal is to get a single out as soon as we have it recorded.

FTV: Would you ever be a guest judge on American Idol?
Jada:  I don’t think I would wanna be a judge but I definately enjoy watching the show. When I see auditions, a lot of things run through my head. Of course I give these people a lot of credit for what they are doing. As a performer I know what it’s like to audition for something and it can be a little nerve wracking sometimes, especially when you’re auditioning in front of the whole world! Some of the people who audition are really funny, and then there are people who are extremely talented, so it’s a good mix and makes for a very entertaining show I must say! haha.

FTV: Maybe you all will have your own reality show one day! haha
Jada: Yes, we absolutely want to do that! We’re so goofy all the time, I’m sure it would make for an interesting show!

Interview with Jada at the Ultimate Prom

The Ultimate Prom was the prom of year…but only a few select singers were chosen to be apart of it. Universal Motown Recording Artists, and our girls, Jada were one of them! We caught up with Jada at their luxurious suite at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. The girls looked stunning in their colorful dresses and perfect hair and makeup. They looked ready to attend the prom themselves! The lucky school was about to experience some show from these girls. Let’s rewind though and go back to before the show where we were able to talk to the group to find out their vibe on the entire event. Below you will read the partial interview with the girls. Find out how they compare Boston to New York, what they thought of their own proms, and how they felt when they found out they were performing for the Ultimate Prom.

Q&A

FTV: We know you’re from Boston. We’re so happy you girls are finally in New York. How would you compare them?

Elle: Very very different!
Lauren: Boston is kind of like a big town. Everyone knows everyone’s name after a while.
Elle: It’s a big college town.
April: I love New York. We all live in Boston but I’m not from there. I’m originally from Connecticut but I’m a New York girl. I would love to move to the city.
Jacyn: There’s a lot of history in Boston that I think is pretty cool. New York’s cool too though!

FTV: What was your reaction when you found out you were going to be a part of the Ultimate Prom?

Lauren: I was so excited that we could go to the prom again! This time it’s Super Prom though.
Elle: It’s definitely 100 times more what my prom was even close to

FTV: Did you all go to your own prom:

All: Yes!
April: and it was so much fun and it’s great that we can make the prom for these kids amazing.
Jacyn: and we’re all each other’s dates this time! haha No drama.
April: Going with your girlfriends is so much better than boy drama. Then you won’t have to get upset if the guy doesn’t dance with you because you can just dance with your girlfriends.

FTV: What will you be singing tonight?
April: We will be singing “I’m that Chick” and “Denial” and also a short accapella by our favorite group “En Vogue.”
