Blind Auditions on The Voice!

Top Performances from the Blind Auditions on The Voice, 10/6/2014!

Last Monday, October 6th, marked the final night of the Blind Auditions for season 7 of The Voice. The reality television show kicked off with each coach having 2 spots left to add to their team. The stakes were high, the contestants were confident in their abilities, and the coaches were excited to find new talent.

Read on for my top 3 favorites of The Voice during the blind auditions of Monday, 10/6/2014.

The VoiceThe first artist to stand in front of the coaches was Matt McAndrew, a 23-year-old singer from Philadelphia. His love of music since high school sparked his interest to audition for The Voice and shoot for winning the record deal. Not only did Matt seem like a totally down-to-earth guy, but he was dedicated to music, majoring in voice and being a guitar teacher.

Matt sang A Thousand Years by Christina Perri for the judges while accompanying himself with a guitar. Not only were his vocals well blended into the song, but the guitar brought a remarkable sound to Perri’s single. The judges were blown away by his performance and he had three chairs turn to him, thanks to his intense vocals and charismatic personality.

This was definitely one of my favorite performances, not only because I absolutely love the song, but for Matt’s unique vocal style while performing. Since A Thousand Years isn’t originally a guitar song, it was great to hear it played and sung in a different light. Matt ended up choosing Adam Levine over Blake Shelton and Pharrell Williams. The other contestants certainly have much competition against this young singer.

The next contestant was Brittany Butler, a Berklee trained singer and a YouTuber known for posting covers of popular hits. As soon as she started to sing, it was clear that her voice was different than what is usually heard on the show.

Brittany had a bit of a blues style with a slight mix of pop in her performance of The Girl from Ipanema. Since she had admitted that she grew up listening to 40’s and 50’s records, it wasn’t surprising that she chosen a bossa nova record. It was nice to hear a cover of a 1900’s song, since most songs performed on The Voice are from the present days.

Although both Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams wanted her on their teams, Brittany chose Pharrell. It was a bit surprising since Gwen complimented her style and offered to work with her in terms of clothing choices. Gwen is the owner of 4 fashion lines and this opportunity is certainly not one many would want to pass up.

Nevertheless, Brittany will likely get pretty far in this competition and I am rooting for her as another one of my favorite contestants. I love her vocals, the songs she likes to  sing are on top of the line, and her style gives her that overall complete look.

Beth Spangler was probably the performer who brought the biggest surprise on to the stage this season. She is a children’s pediatric from South Carolina and a country girl, to which most would assume that she sings country songs. Yet Beth admitted that she is not actually a country singer, but performs soul-pop songs.

I did not actually believe this until she came on stage and began to sing Best Thing I Never Had by Beyonce. Most people would not dare touch a Beyonce song as she has especially powerful vocals. To the coaches surprise and mine, Beth actually pulled off the song quite well. Although her vocals might not have been those of Beyonce, she is definitely  a skilled singer and I cannot wait to hear more of her voice.

At the end of her performance, Pharrell actually stood up for her (which as the coaches discussed in the beginning) meant he really liked her. He began to persuade Beth to join his team, and it was a tough competition for him since all 4 judges had turned their chairs. Even after he finished speaking to her, Pharrell continued to stand in support while the other judges worked their magic on her.

She was faced with a tough decision of which coach to choose, but her gut told her to pick Adam Levine. With Wrecking Ball playing in the background and Adam running to hug her, it was definitely an unforgettable moment.

This season’s performances did not disappoint and the mix of singers on the teams will certainly create an impressive competition, especially when the artists compete in the next rounds.

Don’t forget that next Monday, October 13th is The Battles Premiere on The Voice. Team members will compete in duets against other teams, with star advisers supporting them. The star advisers this season are Stevie Nicks, Little Big Town, Gavin Rossdale, and Alicia Keys.
