[Review] Beach Boys Bring the Warmth of the Sun to Westchester County, New York

    July 6, 2016

Now we can say it is officially summer in Westchester County, New York.  The Beach Boys rolled into town on Wednesday, July 6th and they were joined by none other than John Stamos.    The Westchester County Center was abuzz with fans dressed in a sea of Hawaiian shirts.  We actually saw a good range of ages from children to baby boomers.  Find out how they’re celebrating the 50th Anniversary for Pet Sounds, the new band members for the Beach Boys, the reaction of the audience, and some special moments.

    50th Anniversary for Pet Sounds

The Beach Boys are celebrating the 50th Anniversary for their highly acclaimed Pet Sounds album in a grand way.  Scott Totten, the musical director has been hard at work on setlists to bring in more obscure and lesser known songs from the album to introduce them to an audience hungry for great music.  In addition, they now have a large screen behind the band on the stage showing scenes from Beach Boys shows of the past.

   Do You Wanna Dance?

As a part of the celebration for Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary the crowd was treated to a very special performance from Dennis Wilson.  Mike Love said they dug deep into the archives to find this video of Dennis singing and the band didn’t miss a beat supporting Dennis’s golden voice.

   Then I Kissed Her

Mike Love’s Beach Boys have some new faces on the stage.  One of them is Brian Eichenberger.  Formally of the Four Freshmen, Brian is lending his powerful vocals to America’s Band.  Brian brings strong on key vocals, with an innate rhythm.  We also noticed the speed of the songs has increased from past shows.

   In the Spotlight

Scott Totten, a very talented guitarist played some fantastic solos.  We missed him showing off his vocals in “Ballad of Ole Betsey” as it wasn’t part of the setlist.  You can still hear Scott’s nimble fingers work the guitar as the spotlight hits him in a number of solo spots.

   John Stamos

John has been everywhere lately, most notably with “Grandfathered” and the huge Netflix hit “Fuller House.”  The Westchester audience was delighted to see his familiar face hit the stage.  There were moments of banter between Mike Love and John Stamos along with a great drum solo to start off “Be True to Your School.”  John in his usual fashion, was all over that stage playing the drums for many songs, guitar, and even took to the piano for one song.

   Fun Fun Fun

The staple encore song brought everyone to their feet as the familiar tune began to play.  The standout part of this song was the ending drum solo by none other than John Cowsill who played the drums at a speed which almost seemed inhuman!  He plays with full passion to the huge applause of the audience.

Mike Love’s Beach Boys are a group of very talented musicians.  We do however wish that more of them were able to sing their own solos.  It’s always so great to hear them showcase their talents.  In addition, they should have the spotlight on soloists so the audience can discern who is singing as it can sometimes be difficult to tell.

The setlist was actually one of the longest we encountered at a Beach Boys concert rounding out to about 40 numbers.  They did take a short intermission around the one-hour mark, but then came back with great energy to finish the next hour.

The Beach Boys and John Stamos performed an excellent show that had the audience on their feet more than not.  The arrangements of the songs were stellar, picking up speed on songs to match the originals.  They are on a nationwide tour all summer.  Watch for them coming to a city near you!
