This Monday’s premiere of Dancing with the Stars was one of the best yet! It was jam packed with incredible dance routines, intriguing behind the scenes rehearsal footage, and revealing interviews of the contestants. Of course, as the night went on, each pair received their scores from the judges and the leaderboard was formed. Check below to see descriptions of the top 3 and bottom 2 performances!
1. Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson
Since he started out on broadway as a child, it is no surprise that this “Fresh Prince of Bel-AIr” actor is in first place after just the first night! Alfonso Ribeiro and his partner Witney Carson nailed their fast-paced Jive performance, which earned great respect from the judges. They said that Alfonso had natural talent, and that they had the best performance of the night. With 36/40 points, this couple may have already set the bar, and could quite possibly make it until the end!
2. Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas
Sadie Robertson was definitely one of the lesser-known contestants to begin with, and last night, she blew everyone away! With her partner Mark Ballas, she performed the Cha Cha, and earned themselves 34/40 and a second place position! The judges were blown away when she admitted that she wasn’t allowed to dance at her school- and you wouldn’t have any idea after that performance!
3. A tie! Lea Thompson and Artem Chigvintsev, and Bethany Mota and Derek Hough
Two stars secured their spots in third place last night with 32/40 points- and that was Lea Thompson and her partner Artem Chigvintsev, and Bethany Mota with Derek Hough. Lea Thompson stated in her rehearsal video that she had always wanted to be a ballerina, but she was rejected. And now, she finally has the chance. She and Artem danced the foxtrot, and even started hilarious rumors that she was Artem’s cougar. Next up is YouTube stay Bethany Mota, who has brought a ton of attention to the show this season. Along to “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift, Bethany and five times winner Derek Hough danced thee jive. The judges said that they loved her energy and they believe she will be on the show for the long run.
1. Lolo Jones and Keo Motsepe
Although she is a tough former Olympian, Lolo Jones didn’t seem to earn herself a gold medal on the dance floor on Monday night. During the rehearsal videos, Jonas admits she doesn’t have much experience with slow dancing and has trouble getting close and intimate with someone. When she loses control of a prop during the Cha Cha performance, you also see her lose her confidence. Due to her athletic mindset, Lolo seems to beat herself up for the unfortunate event. Partner Keo Motsepe and the judges tried to give her encouraging words, but they ended up earning only 22/40 points, leaving them in second to last place.
2. Betsey Johnson and Tony Dovolani
Being a fashion designer doesn’t exactly grant you immunity from wardrobe malfunctions! During her cha cha routine to “Material Girl” by Madonna, Betsey Johnson attempted to pull a feather boa from a rack, when it just wouldn’t give. This threw off her performance with partner Tony Dovolani, which earned them a measly 20/40 points. But, no matter the circumstances, Betsey was still brought to tears over the roaring crowd and their support. Not bad for being 72 years old!
