Two new and similar songs have entered onto Billboard’s Hot 100 recently by two male artists who are no strangers to the charts.
Bruno Mars – When I Was Your Man – 4 stars
When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars is a ballad filled with lyrics of guilt and regret about not being the perfect man to a woman who is now no longer his. The song is a laundry list of all of the things he should have done for her when the relationship was still going strong. The sad lyrics coupled with only a piano in the background evokes such sadness and emotion that the audience instantly picks up on and internalizes. This track tugs at your heartstrings. And then there’s Bruno Mars’ smooth, classic voice that makes you fall in love with this song even if you can’t relate to its content. This beautiful ballad is one that you will undoubtedly catch yourself singing along passionately to.

Mirrors – Justin Timberlake – 2 stars
“Mirrors” is the second single off of Justin Timberlake’s new album, “The 20/20 Experience,” and is once again produced by Timbaland. Even though (somehow) JT has hit the jackpot yet again with another chart-topping hit, the only unique thing about this song is its sweet and metaphor-filled lyrics. Every girl’s fantasy, Timberlake describes a woman so well suited for him that he believes she’s his other half, his reflection, and doesn’t want to ever lose her. However, as far as the music goes, this track is nothing special, and resembles so many of his past hits, especially “Cry Me A River.” It’s as if JT’s singing style hasn’t changed much since his emergence as a solo artist, and also as if he just keeps reusing the same music again and again.
